How do cyber attackers shut off pipeline in The US 

Investigators at the largest petrol pipeline in the US are working to recover from a cyber-attack that killed oil supplies.

Colonial pipeline hacking is seen as one of the most serious attacks on the country's most critical infrastructure in history.

The pipeline carries about half of the east coast gasoline and pump prices are expected to rise if the power outages last too long.

How can a pipe be broken?

For many people, the image of the oil industry is one of pipelines, pumps and fuel oil.

In fact, the modern form of Colonial pipeline work is extremely digital.

And as cyber experts like Jon Niccolls, of CheckPoint, point out, where there is a connection, there is a risk of cyber attacks:

"All the equipment used to operate a modern pipeline is computer-controlled, rather than human-controlled," he said.

"If they are connected to the organisation's internal network and are attacked by a cyber-attack, the pipe itself is at risk of a malicious attack."

How do hackers get in?

Direct attacks on operating technology are rare because these systems are often better protected, experts say.

It is therefore possible for hackers to gain access to the Cape computer system through the business management side.

"Some of the biggest attacks we've ever seen all started with email," Mr Niccolls said.

"An employee may have been tricked into downloading another malware, for example.

"We have also seen recent examples of hackers starting to exploit weaknesses or compromise with third-party software.

"The hackers will use every opportunity they get to gain access to the network."

Colonial Pipeline Route

Scammers may be within the Colonial IT network weeks or months before launching their hack attacks.

In the past, criminals have had serious causes after finding their way into software programs dealing with operating technology.

In February, a criminal obtained access to a Florida city water system and tried to pump out a "dangerous" amount of chemicals.

An employee saw it happen on his screen and stopped the attack.

Similarly, in the winter of 2015-16, Ukrainian hackers were able to illuminate the digital transformation of an electric plant, making the cuts affect hundreds of thousands of people.

How can this be stopped?

The easiest way to protect operating technology is to keep it offline, without an internet connection.

But this is becoming increasingly difficult for businesses, as they rely heavily on connected devices to improve efficiency.

"Traditionally, organizations were doing something known as 'air gapping'," said cyber security expert Kevin Beaumont.

Who are the hijackers?

The FBI has confirmed that DarkSide, a relatively new and suspected terrorist group based in Russia, is responsible for this.

Like most ransomware groups, DarkSide uses an affiliate program that allows "partners" to use its malware to attack targets, exchanging the percentage of ransom revenue.

DarkSide previously said it would start donating some of the money held to charities.

How can critical services be protected?
