By using some keyboard shortcuts

For capturing the whole screen

If you want to capture the screenshot of the entire screen then you have to just press Shift + Command +3 and it will capture the whole screen and it would be saved on the desktop by default.

For capturing a window

For capturing a portion of the screen

If you want to take the screen shot of a portion of the screen then just you have to press Shift + command+4 and your pointer would be converted into a crosshair. You have to select the desired area and click then your screenshot would be captured. If you want to select another portion after you have selected another portion by mistake then you could just click Esc to cancel it .

It also allows you to record the screen .

How to change where screenshots in Mac are saved

By default, screen captures are saved to your desktop, yet you can change that. Open the screen capture instrument with Shift+Command+5, or by going to Launchpad > Other > Screenshot > Options.
